Acne

Acne, the most common skin disorder, affects millions of people. Acne is generally caused by a combination of factors including genetic, hormonal, dietary and environmental. Often, patients believe that they have acne when in fact they have a condition that only appears like acne (e.g., acne rosacea, perioral dermatitis), yet require a completely different treatment. Each type of acne responds differently, depending on the treatment type. Stress or hormones that stimulate an over-production of oil usually trigger acne, most often on the face, chest and back.

The excess oil production causes the follicles on your skin to clog and become inflamed. Around 85% of teenagers develop acne that can often last for years and an estimated 20% of adults suffer from acne. Persistent and stubborn acne can cause social embarrassment and can negatively impact self-esteem. Severe acne cases, if left untreated, can lead to permanent scarring.

Exact diagnosis of acne and the type of acne

Often patients believe that they have acne when in fact they have a condition that appears like acne but is not and requires a different treatment. Examples include acne rosacea and perioral dermatitis.

Often patients will have one type of acne, such as Comedonal and will be treated as if they had papular acne, or they may have cystic acne and be treated as if they had papular acne.

In order to tailor an appropriate specific treatment modality, the exact diagnosis is mandatory.
Contributing factors

Before starting with medical treatment, Dr. Friedman believes that it is smartest to identify and eliminate any practice which can be contributing to and or causing the acne.

The issues include:

How is the patient washing their face?
Which type of facial soap does the patient use?
What kind of cosmetics does one put in their hair?
What kind of makeup does the patient use?
What is the patient’s diet?
Does the patient touch their face?
Is there is an excess of hormones?

Other medical conditions

Does the patient have a history of hepatitis or depression which will affect the choice of the treatment?
