WHAT ARE THE VARIOUS METHODS OF REMOVING A MOLE?
Moles in the past have been removed by either excisional surgery with stitches or by a shave excision. Although both methods allow for complete histological analysis of the removed mole, they would often result in either long or deep scars.
Laser removal is far less likely to result in a scar but histological analysis will not be complete and thus laser mole removal is reserved for moles that have a 100% benign appearance.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF LASER MOLE REMOVAL?
Laser mole removal often affords the best cosmetic result.
DOES LASER MOLE REMOVAL HURT?
There is no pain since the lesion is anesthetized.
HOW MANY LASER TREATMENTS DOES IT TAKE?
Most patients require 1-2 sessions.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER THE TREATMENT?
The treatment area will appear like a wound that usually heals within one week. At this time, the area can be covered with makeup until residual redness resolves, usually within 2-4 weeks.
Approach to Treatment
Dr. Friedman will examine your skin to determine the nature of the mole. If he has any concern about the benign nature of the mole, he will recommend a biopsy and an alternative treatment plan. Depending on the number of moles and their locations, laser mole removal treatments typically take a few minutes with minimal discomfort. The type and frequency of treatment varies from patient to patient. Flat moles often require multiple treatments. Raised moles usually require one session, but can require an additional one or two sessions. Post-removal pain is minimal or non-existent.
