Skin cancer, one of the most common types cancers in the world, is highly curable when identified early. There are many types of skin cancer; the most common forms are caused by excessive sun exposure. The terms ”melanoma” and “non-melanoma” skin cancers are used to describe these types of skin cancers.
Non-melanoma skin cancers include actinic keratosis (AK), basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Melanoma is the most deadly type of skin cancer while BCC and SCC are the most common types. When detected early, the cure rate for BCC and SCC is about 95%. Approach to Treatment
Regular skin self-exams and a yearly examination by a dermatologist will help you find early signs of skin cancers. If you have any risk factors for skin cancer, see Dr. Friedman for a skin cancer screenings once a year. Risk factors include excessive sun exposure, family history of skin cancer, or any “funny looking” moles that require ongoing monitoring. Given the strong sun in Israel, it is recommended to receive a yearly screening as well as to engage in ongoing self-exams. The screening is a visual inspection of the skin and takes approximately 10 minutes. Should Dr. Friedman find any early signs of skin cancer, he will advise an immediate and appropriate course of action.
